Thanks for the info.  I looked at the Gaim and lik it.
I couldn't get it to log onto MSN so I thought that maybe
I needed a later version of Gaim so I tried to download
and install.  I think that opened a can of worms.  It
wouldn't build because I don't have GTK 2.  I tried to
get that and ran into more problems.  It said that
pkg-config couldn't be found so I tried to install that.
That seemed to install ok but still I can't do the ./configure
for GTK because it says that pkg-config can't be found.

Since then I found that the MSN problem must have been
a temporary net problem because I was able to log on.

Has anyone been able to install and run the latest Gaim
on SuSE 8.0?  Better yet, is there a SuSE package?
