If I go to my home directory and issue the command "ls", I see all files, including those starting with ".". Shouldn't those files be hidden unless I use the "-a" option?
Don't run as root :) do "type ls" you should see "ls is aliased to `ls $LS_OPTIONS` Then do "echo $LS_OPTIONS" You should see something including -a. That's why the dot-files are showing. Though by default this is only set for root, not for regular users. If you want to get rid of it, redefine LS_OPTIONS in your .bashrc to something that doesn't include -a
