Tony,
Auto-CAD stays for Automated Computer Aided Design tool.
It applies not only to mech. engineering, but other eng. fields 
as well.
All our EE packages like CADENCE, Mentor Graphics, LTL, ADS, SPECS 
and others are in fact Auto-CAD type tools.
