Hi,

I've got an Alcatel Speedtouch working fine with SuSE 8.2 on BtOpenworld. Hope
some of these thoughts help.

Yes, select PPP, over ATM, with "0.38" (without quotes) in Yast2 DSL
configuration page. I also select Hotplug in the device activation pull-down.
The VPI/VCI is specifically for BT - if you're using a different provider, it
is possibly different. Check the docs for your provider.

You also need to select your provider details, and your full username as given
to you with your DSL activation from your provider. This is something like
username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx -- just your username isn't enough. Also enter
your password. On the next screen, ensure "modify DNS when connected" is
checked.

At the end of configuration, the DSL configuration overview should display
something like:
DSL Devices
Device: dsl0 Type: DSL Provider: BT Openworld
Providers
Name: provider0 Provider: BT Openworld

Try plugging in the Speedtouch modem, and look at the lights. They should go
through a pattern of flashing which takes about 15 seconds, finishing with
both green LEDs on.

If not, drop into a terminal, su to root and enter "modprobe speedtouch", then
"speedmgmt &". The speedmgmt utility loads the modem firmware and sets it up
for use. Then try connecting using kinternet. What happens in the log, if it
doesn't work? (Right click on the kinternet icon, and select view log).

SuSE have done all the kernel stuff. Their version of the module is named
speedtouch. The one available from the linuxusb sourceforge site is called
speedtch. Follow the instructions on the SuSE site to the letter, including
the stuff about altering the hotplug scripts.

You don't provide _quite_ enough info, but I hope the above helps a little.
Let us know how you get on.
