I've installed a vanilla kernel on 5 machines... and have only had to
play with the sound on 3 of them.
Download the: libs, drivers, utilities from www.alsa-project.org and
do a ./configure, make, make install on each of them (after you've
booted to the new kernel) and you'll be all set.
