could not find root partion,how to find it back?

I use IBM345 2*2G cpu , Raid card with raid5, 4G memory,suse 8.0
today my computer suddenly down, and I went into recruit modal, I cannot mount root partition , it showed no block . but other partition I can mount.
I use fsck.reiserfs to check the /dev/sda4, which is root partition, but it shows:
bread: cannot read a block#12
I used every parameter , but still can not restore .
how to restore the root partition? or I just want to copy the important files
from other partition, I use usb hard disk, but not know how to mount it in recruit
model. who can help me ? thank you very much.
