It is now.......SuSE has a mysql.server file in /usr/share/mysql/ that no one else uses......nice to have, but it isn't what I was looking for to get the beast up and running. Anyway, as root, it will start or stop the server just fine. I wrote a couple scripts to start and stop it without being root. Now, to get the critter working with SO. 'Have an idea that's going to be a royal pain in the butt.

You can start mysqld at startup by enabling it in the runlevel editor. To save the user having to start and stop it manually. Steve
