Hi John and anybody else following this yarn - Thanks for sending the comparison file. This problem just keeps getting more "interesting" all the time. Tried using the graphical YaST2 today to look at things ans was told under sound card configuration that there was an available 82801 AC'97 audio and that I already had configured (the install did this) an Intel 82801DB-ICH4 and it was configured as snd-card-0. Clicking on the configure option for the AC'97 variant I get an error message from YaST2 saying "The number of currently running sound cards doesn't match the number of configured cards in your configuration files. Try to restart sound system? Y N " If I try to change the installed ICH4 item I'm told that I need to do so from a shell as root with YaST2 sound .oss which I attempted and got the result of "Hardware detection found a new sound card. To configure it - as the FIFTH sound card, select the appropriate item in the list and press configure." Doing this just bounces me out of the configuration. Returning to the graphical YaST2 I tried the option of restarting the sound system which resulted in the message "No soundcard available." Now booting shows no sound module being loaded at startup nor - obviously - one being unloaded at shutdown. Any thoughts. It seems to me as though 8.2 doesn't understand how to work with on-board sound at all. dave John wrote:

Hi David,
Here's a copy of my /etc/modules.conf , I have a SBLive card, and a Shuttle MOBO, so naturally some things are different, but I noticed 2 or 3 lines on yours that are on mine, but mine are uncommented, and IIRR, there may be a line or two missing from yours that mine has, but I couldn't tell you if that means anything for you or not, sorry. Maybe you can try commenting/uncommenting one line at a time to look lke mine, and do a depmod
-a or something like that? I sure wish I could help more, but I just don't have the know-how yet.
