I am having very strange intermittent problems with SuSE8.2 using KDE (I have not tried any other desktop environments since the problem started). After I saw a post by someone about WideStudio I thought I would give it a try. My problems started when I made a failed attempt to rebuild the WideStudio source RPM. The rebuild gave me several dependency errors and then some weird ones that I don't remember (didn't think important at the time). Since then I have had very odd behaviour with my machine. Immediately following the failed rebuild and the at random (haven't noticed any particular pattern) intervals therafter I will get errors like the following: -bash: /bin/ls: Input/output error after attempting a command (ls in this case) from konsole or any other terminal window. Then I will attempt to log out of KDE, either with the button, menu or ALT-CTRL-BKSPACE combo. This will kick me out to the textual login as if I had done an init 3. I will attempt to log in as myself or root to try to see what is going on and I get the following: INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes This will then repeat every 5 minutes. I have tried to switch to any other console (i.e. CTRL-SHIFT-F1...) and have similar results. Then nothing else responds. My only option is a forced power off or pressing the reset button. The first time this happened my /etc/hosts file was wiped out. After replacing that, I have not noticed anything else that has been altered or deleted. The system will then restart without any errors. Anybody got any idea where I might look to find the source of this problem? Or has anyone had a similar problem and know a fix? Below are some snippets from log files in /var/log/. Anybody know what these mean: /var/log/messages snippet: May 23 12:34:02 cormhouse su: pam_unix2: session started for user root, service su May 23 12:37:05 cormhouse su: pam_unix2: session finished for user root, service su May 23 12:45:00 cormhouse kernel: xfs_force_shutdown(ide0(3,4),0x8) called from line 1042 of file xfs_trans.c. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry about the long post, wanted to include as much as I could (or knew). Darrell
