I'd just install Suse's rpm package via Yast. From what I've read on Mplayer, it's the 'project from hell' to compile. I've not compiled it myself.
I've never found it any harder than any other 'configure && make && make install' sort of app. The problem with it seems to be getting all its dependencies sorted: it relies on all sorts of other libraries to play encrypted DVDs, Quicktime, Windows Media and so on. Once you've got all the right versions of all the libraries installed, mplayer is easy. I wouldn't recommend building a complete mplayer for a beginner though - there's an awful lot of hoops to jump through. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003
