Once or twice a year I pick up a SuSE distribution just to see how things are coming along. Invariably something I'd really like to use doesn't work right but I must say that 8.2 seems to have truly gotten it right. This is a great distro. The one thing I can't figure out is how to connect to my printer which is connected to a WinXP machine (kids, games, yada yada). Yast2 says "The Printer Server is accessible" and I can print to the printer if I boot Redhat 9.0 instead of Suse 8.2. When I print nothing happens. Nothing on the queue. The output just vanishes. What are the other magic words to get this to work ? Samba is installed and configured but the server doesn't appear to be running. Does it need to be ?
Thanks
Yes it does... but it also may need to be configured.... To see if the server is running, do a: ps aux | grep smb and ps aux | grep nmb If those commands show that neither is running, then you need to go to the Yast2 --> system > runlevel editor --> properties? and enable those servers and start them. I believe that: chkconfig smb on and chkconfig nmb on would also get them going. But I believe you will need to configure samba too to use the printers and I suppose YAST2 will also do this under its hardware --> printers dialog but I've never done it. See how far you get with the above and then come back for more. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
