Hello!
I rebooted our server with SLES8 yesterday, and hwscan simply never ends :-(
Afair, I updated hwscan with SP2, previously I had no such problem.
Solution-
insserv -r hwscan
:-)

I'm sure I missed something simple here, but I can't find a way to turn off the new hardware scan at boot time.
I have two SLES8 boxes that share a mouse/keyboard/monitor with several other servers. Yesterday we had a power outage in the computer room and both of my SuSE boxes stopped booting when they couldn't find a mouse. They were waiting for me to choose a mouse type. Kind of embarrassing since the Win2K machines came up OK.
I poked around in YAST2 trying to turn off new hardware scanning but I didn't see anything.
Could someone be kind enough to wack me upside the head with a clue stick? Thank you, sir. May I have another?
Cheers, Mark Stahlke
