X Config Problem on 8.2

I just did a clean install of 8.2. When the system boots and attempts to
load the log in screen, my monitor displays a warning that the signal is out
of sync.
I booted "Failsafe", and tried running yast in text mode. It shows that my
monitor was detected as a Samsung SyncMaster 4S, when in fact it's a Samsung
SyncMaster 957MB. When I try to change the settings using yast, I get the
same blank screen with the monitor displaying the "out of sync" message
again.
I get the same result when I try to run sax2 directly. Once sax2 launches,
the screen goes blank with the out of sync message.
Since I can get to a command line, and I (think I) can use vim, what is the
X config file I need to edit manually?
Thanks,
Mark
