Well, this sort of thing spirals out of control over email. The question I have for you is: Is your squirrelmail machine the same as your IMAP machine? If so, don't worry about encrypting your passwords; it's all local anyway, and your passwords aren't being seen on the network. When I look at the squirrelmail options, I don't see an option for doing CRAM-MD5 passwords to an IMAP server.
