My production environment is running 8.1. I got 8.2 but am not willing to make it my production environment (apache problems). Yet there are some things I would like to get that are on the 8.2 disks. In particular, kde 3.1 and xfree 4.3.
Why don't you just get these updates via ftp for 8.1. They have been available for over a month, made for 8.1. I wouldn't suggest updating 8.1 with stuff from b.2, as 8.2 is compiled with gcc 3.3, while 8.1 is compiled with gcc 3.2. There might be enough differences/ incompatibilities as to cause you some problems, which are entirely avoidable using the updates for your exact version. YMMV
I did that. There are 149 files for the kde update. Count them, I did. Try to rpm kdebase3 for example and you get failed dependencies. Ditto qt and other stuffs. In other words, the necessary sub files are not getting grabbed and updated when I try to rpm the base install. Yes I can quit x, erase kde completly and build from source. And if I have to that is what I will do. But the box this is on is my desktop with a ton of stuff that is at the moment mission critical. And if YAST could deal with the upgrade I'd rather it happen that way. I had thought about having yast look into the directory that I stored the kde downloaded files in but I remembered the difficulty I had telling yast I had another source for the install.
