Hi all -
I just received my 8.2 Pro and I'. wondering about the virtues of an upgrade vs. clean install. I would like to keep my stuff going (esp. the DVD player), but I want to make sure that an upgrade install will allow the new HW rcognition.

Based on what people on this list have been reporting: YMMV! Factors: is your /home on a separate partition? If yes, then a clean install not formatting /home will be good to try. If no, then backup at least /home and /etc and try the upgrade. Some people have had easy upgrades, others (myself included) have not. For instance, I've had SuSE 8.0 and 8.1 (all Pro) on this box with no hardware changes for a year. I tried the upgrade 8.2 Pro and it absolutely could not handle the SCSI adapter with the SCSI hard drive sharing IRQ 11 with the NIC so no lan/Internet access for me. I tried every type of installation, slot switching, etc. with no success. Finally pulled the adapter and hard drive and everything went well. Of course, by that time I was doing clean, formatted installs! There may have been a way to get around the IRQ problem without reinstalling, but I'm not enough of a linux wizard to know them so that's why I took the approach I did. Point is, 8.2 had trouble with hardware that 8.0 & 8.1 didn't. So, I guess the answer is: backup and try it. If upgrade doesn't work with your DVD, post back and the wizards may be able to help without your doing a full install.
