Hold on. When the system is booting up, you only have the grub/lilo menu,
there is no support for checkboxes. Perhaps you should talk to grub/lilo
developpers to add them! :-)
Seriously, I agree that the safeboot option is an overkill. So? What I do
is _edit_ the boot up line (just press any key when the menu pops up) and
add acpi=off, or delete ide=nodma from the failsafe entries. Probably
deleting things from the failsafe line is easier, and I think it is
mentioned on the manual.
Those lines are editable during boot, so you can try them.
