I think you must tell shutdown when you want it to shut down. shutdown now Also see the man pages for shutdown If you just want the computer to stop right now, you can use halt in stead of shutdown. Halt does not need any parameters. If you want more help, please post exactly what you have put in /etc/sudoers (just the line for stopping the system) + exactly how you try to stop the system + exactly what the system tells you when you try to stop it.
