That's true for backups in general. Compressing them makes it much more unlikely that you'll be able to recover a corrupt one.
If you use a method that first compresses individual files, and then tar them, you wouldn't loose the whole set in case of error on one disk. tgz are not too good in that case. There was a cute script for that in suse 7.3: kbackup, no longer included. Years ago I used compressed backups on floppies (a hundred of them) and the software I used was able to recover from media errors. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
