I guess I'm already through this with my radeon. I've
upgraded X 4.2 to 4.3 (running 8.1) using SuSE rpms
and 3D didn't work, I was getting ~ 300fps at most.
I've downloaded 4.3 drivers from here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=12629
and now it works fine, I'm getting up to 3000fps.
I have posted question earlier today what would be
good procedure to install them but as nobody replied
yet I tried myself and it worked out fine.

same chipset. Your mileage may vary but you could

ATI's site for the driver.
(wow, twice in one day) Ummm... take a look at the last line of his original query:

[and in fact, elsewhere on this thread it is noted that the 4.2 driver will explicitly UNLOAD itself because 4.2 <> 4.3]
It is "letter writing time" again to get ATI off it's duff and either relax their paranoia settings [the original ATI driver made an explicit check and would unload itself if you had a "POWERED BY" card instead of a "BUILT BY" card...] -OR- ATI should be more pro-active in certifying for new releases of Xfree [this can't take more than a day -- after all, it should be as simple as a pass/fail test suite. (*)] Odd "corner-case" errors should be dealt with if and when reported -- makes everyone happier [or, at least I *hope* that people wouldn't be overzealous in criticizing ATI for bugs found with v4.3 "on the first day..."]
