Not sure about how to see messages, but a couple of things.
#1 - When I kicked off MySQL for the first time it tried to chown some
stuff to a mysql user and threw an error. So I created a mysql user,
deleted the tmp databases under /var/lib/mysql and reran the setup and
got no error messages.
#2 - MySQL by default has no password. You should probably create one.
The easiest way I've found to fix this (assuming you also use apache
already) is to install phpMyAdmin and go in through that interface to
change the password.
