It is a soyo SY-5EMA+ Super 7 motherboard with a 1998 bios -- Apollo MVP3
chipset (an ETEQ version licensed from VIA -- ETEQ82C663x -- VIA calls
it VT82C598MVP Apollo MVP3 for the North bridge, and VT82C586B for
the south bridge/IDE interface.) It only handles up to PC-100 SDRAM,
so it is a lot older than yours, and has a long history of kernel
problems which your chipset probably never had -- I was just curious
of anyone had finally gotten it to work reliably. After posting the
question it occurred to me that it might be a problem caused by an
interaction with my ISA sound card (Real Sound Blaser 16 which used to
be necessary when playing "DOOM") -- it tends to hang very soon after
KDE starts playing sound.
Thanks for the input.
