Michael, thanks much. Clears up alot. I will give it a stab in the next day or so and advise back. See some earlier references to APIC and varying degrees of support out of the box with 8.2. Did you have to perform additional tweaks to get this functioning correctly on the Compaq? Regards! K. First answer) I'm going to assume you use GRUB to boot from since SuSE installs this by default (this is the app that allows you to select between different Operating Systems at boot time eg. Windows vs Linux) There is a file located at /boot/grub/menu.lst. Open this file as root with an editor, and you'll see the different boot configuration settings for each OS. On the line for linux, add the pci=biosirq to the end of the line that starts with "kernel". On the next reboot, this flag will be read and used. Second & Third answer) Both of these settings are found in the file /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia. This file has a lot of comments in it that help you understand the settings better. The very first setting is the PCMCIA_SYSTEM setting, which will =kernel. That's the one you should change to say external. A couple settings farther down is the PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS setting as well. If you need any further clearing up, write me back. I had to learn this all myself, so I can understand feeling a little lost here :) On Wednesday 23 April 2003 12:01 am, knesbitt wrote:
Hi Michael, thanks for the info. You'll have to excuse the silly questions however I am very new to Linux and wonder where these configs are made (file?) Where specifically do you specify "pci=biosirq" in? You mention to use "external drivers" also, but is there a command line for this? Finally where would I find the file PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS ??
Thanks man for all your help!

For the PCMCIA, I've noticed that I had to add "pci=biosirq". Also specify in /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia to use the external drivers, not the kernel ones, and edit the PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS to ="irq_list=11". I've never had to do this with any linux system on my older (toshiba) laptop, but with this Compaq, it's been more like the laptop's playing "hard to get!"
