I thought SuSE already supported 64-bit platforms, or was that just for IA64, only? Are the 64-bit architectures between Intel and AMD *that* different that they are no longer compatible with each other? (i.e. if a program/OS is IA64 compatible it has to be rebuilt for AMD64, just to work at all) The first 64 bit platform that was supported by Linux was the Digital (now HP) Alpha processor. Jim Paradis made the initial port of 32 bit Linux and Linus made the full 64 bit port about 6 months later. I believe that was back in 1994 or 1995. I don't know the most recent SuSE Linux that supports the Alpha, but you can go to http://www.testdrive.compaq.com where they have 3 Alpha systems running SuSE 7.1. -- Jerry Feldman
