With my experience with a MS.doc file and Open Office I would say that Open Office fails to create a .doc. It is more like just changing the suffix.txt with a .doc. They do seem to "read" OK but not "write". However, even a "read" is limited.

I have had good results with creating, reading and writing MS .doc files with OO. I have even managed to recover a .doc file with OO, after MS Word crashed and stuffed it up. Word would not open it again, but OO did and saved it in the correct format again for Word to open it again. I have even managed to edit a Word doc, with change tracking enabled and pass it on to other team members, who never knew that I used OO and not Word. The problems that I had was with complex Word templates, fonts and layout. But then, I have not used Word or OO that much, only when I need to.
