-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Well, "justified it's purchase" would be a better description -- nothing monetary here... Background: For christmas, I asked for [and received] a scanner -- specifically, the Canon "Lide-30". The reasons for this were mostly aesthetics [roughly 1" tall, "just fits" atop my CPU case, etc] and price [$70 w/discount] and totally lacking of technical reasons [translation: I forgot to check if this was supported under linux...] As you might guess, the answer to that last was "no, not really" -- the "sane" page has some canon support, but mostly a note saying canon is simply "not forthcoming" with driver info, and e-mails to canon prove this to be true. So, now I've installed 8.2, and on a bit of a pre-planned whim, I finally plugged in the scanner [it is USB based] waited for the "beep", and finally the SuSE "new hardware detected" screen came up -- went through the motions, and sure enough -- THERE IT WAS LISTED ! I CAN SCAN NOW! Turns out this uses a "plustek" driver, which is just fine. [if the Canon tech support rep had simply said, "use that one..." I'd have no reason to be bitchy about Canon, but I suspect "corporate mentality" is "never let them see you sweat, (or that you are really an OEM repackager)" so...] - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+pDcMV/YHUqq2SwsRAu0cAJ9yeFdzROMHGv694JC0JbPt62PQ1ACgsifY THoKCq/b93EVdJw1bksTk9E= =ohbc -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
