More news about my missing sound capabilities.
In /var/log/messages I'm getting
Apr 15 17:02:40 huckleberry kernel: ALSA via82xx.c:699: invalid via82xx_cur_ptr, using last valid pointer
Can anyone tell me what this means?
I would guess, based on information I see in the error that I am not absolutely certain about, that you are using AMD with a VIA chip set which is not well, or at all, supported by the default kernels. Did your install auto-detect Athlon and install the correct kernel?
Well, I think it's OK. The response I get from uname -a is Linux huckleberry 2.4.20-4GB-athlon #1 Mon Mar 17 17:56:47 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux The driver for VT8233 seems to be present as /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxxaudio.o but it still isn't producing any sound. What makes this more frustrating is that it worked OK under 8.1, and the newer kernel in 8.2 seems to have improved it worse.
I ended up getting the Mantel built k_athlon kernel to get my VIA chip set to work correctly.
Just a thought.
