Try using alsamixergui if it's DVD sound that's the problem. If it's 
pictures, try setting DMA mode on the DVD drive using YaST. If it's 
encrypted DVDs, it would probably be unlawful for me to tell where to 
find lib-dvdcss.

I got a parport scanner working with 8.2 using xinetd rather than 
/etc/init.d/sane. What model is yours?
