Try using alsamixergui if it's DVD sound that's the problem. If it's pictures, try setting DMA mode on the DVD drive using YaST. If it's encrypted DVDs, it would probably be unlawful for me to tell where to find lib-dvdcss.
I got a parport scanner working with 8.2 using xinetd rather than /etc/init.d/sane. What model is yours?

Well, it DID refuse to upgrade, because I had an RO Filesys, which was NOT installation related, in my fstab. It did not say so , though. That was mean.
And my DVD's won't play clearly. And my scanner is parport, and thus at the moment not compatible. But for rest, AFAIR...cool. I'd say, yep, go get it !
