mplayer or xine. I sometimes use mplayer from the command line, and sometimes xine with the totem GUI. Both are excellent, with support for just about everything you care to throw at them, including DVDs, VCDs and web streams (even quicktime). You can get RPMs for SuSE 8.1 for both, including all other packages you need (codecs for the various formats etc.) from http://packman.links2linux.de I believe the mplayer packages there are built by the SuSE maintainer.
