I gave you a possibly reason. If you left-click to download, and there's a temporary failure, you get an error page on your screen, saying something like "connection timed out", or "Sorry, there are too many users in your class right now". If instead you "right-click->save as", you get that error page saved. I suspect that's why the prowser tried to append .html to the file name.
I'd also be willing to bet an enormous amount of money that the reboot had nothing to do with it. It was just a question of downloading it again from an erratic ftp server. A very common problem on the internet.

Hmm, have to pay closer attention, perhaps I'm getting tired (been hacking away for a couple of days now).
