Beta testing has closed. It went very well and it was determined that the last series of the test were unneeded due to the fact that the last beta went so well. It has some new features, and has the new things such as X4.3, kde3.1 and a few others integrated. From my personal experience I found 8.2 to be a combination of the previous two releases with more polish and refinements. YaST seems to be better integrated and little more comprehensive. The new kernel has more drivers (actually quite a few more) and IMHO is also a more polished kerenl. Furthermore, IIRC there are some features in the kernal the might be from 2.5 that were in a stable state
Well there are also tools like uml (usermode linux which is very insteresting) webmin, QoS wondershaper script ( both with cbq and htb) fetchmsttfonts script was available via YOU ( downloading the fonts from corefonts.sourceforge.net ) once networking is done there is a test phase which is also used to check if there are available updates other then just checking network connection. Postfix is 2.0x there is Exim (however YaST2 can only configure Sendmail and Postfix) Some security tools ie harden_suse was not functioning as it should ( hence it will not be included, bastille IMHO is broken and is not as simple as harden_suse the README.SuSE file has a list of things working and broken. However I think bastille will see a couple of upgrades before it makes it to the final distro SuSEfirewall2 has QoS option also, looks like I need to update the Unofficial Firewall2 document :-( Snort was 1.8.7 ( looks like this will be updated on the final as on the SuSE-Security list it was mentioned as 1.9.1 ) I would say 8.2 is a candidate for desktop fans. However I would not use it as a production server, well I normally do not use any new release anyway. ( my firewall is still running 7.1 with kernel 2.2.19 web/ftp servers running 7.3 with 2.2.19 ) So do not take my words to make a decision as I am conversative on the security and stability side -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
