Weird, logged into SuSE 8.1 and lost my task bar, set the desktop menu, rebooted, same thing happened again, rebooted, on the third try I got my task bar back and now Synaptic works like a charm :-) Now if I could only figure out how to get a button that I setup in the task bar for Synaptic to actually start the app without having to log in :-( Many thanks, Brian Franklin Maurer wrote:

Do you have a /etc/apt/preferences? If not try ... touch /etc/apt/preferences.
apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm
apt-devel-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm
apt4rpm-0.64.1-0.noarch.rpm
synaptic-0.26-rb1.i386.rpm
I think I run synaptic 0.24. Maybe try that one. I think it was Joe who said to rerun apt-get update. Did you try that?
I can try root, but does it make a difference as to whether you log in and use synaptic as root, su or sux as to the result if synaptic doesn't work?
Probably not. But if it did, we'd know that your synaptic actually worked.
