When I do netstat -atpe I see ipp service what is that service?
IPP is the Internet Printing Protocol -- better known locally as "cups" [well, not entirely accurate, but close enough for this discussion] Basically, you've enabled printers on your system to be reachable and usable "from the network". I think if you point your browser to localhost:631 you'll find the "control panel" for configuring and allowing access to your printer(s).

Do I actually need it running for a desktop pc?
Depends: 1) do you have printers hooked up? 2) are you on a network? 3) do you want people "on the network" to use your printer? -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net
