The problem seems to be that this person only knows how to upgrade with KPackage or Yast2, so he has to use the rpm. I remember John Pettigrew describing the problem with the rpm and its solution, a few days ago: I found that the rpm wouldn't install (unmet dependency - needed libXm.so.2 when my system has libXm.so.3) but the static binary is fine- no need to install because it's self-contained.
