Thanks for your response. Yes, 7.3 installs the 2.4 kernel, but according to a posting from August 2002 on the list, the 2.2 kernel should be used. Either way, neither kernel seems to make a difference in getting the SiS 900 driver to work. As to the positioning of the ethernet card, yes, the card on the Celvin is also built into the motherboard, however, the driver doesn't seem to work for some reason. Everything worked fine on the Celvin under Win 98 SE, until it went south. Cables, computer positioning is exactly the same. Nothing has been touched except for trying various system configurations. I have tried installing Xandros 1, Mandrake Power Pack 9 and now SuSE 7.3 Pro, and none of the SiS 900 drivers work with the Celvin for some odd reason. Below is an inline listing of the Celvin specs: Specification Processor AMD K6-2 500MHz ( L2-Cache 512K ) Motherboard: Biostar M5SAF, Flex-ATX Motherboard (M5SAF) Modem: 56K integrated modem Video Card: Integrated in MB Network Card Integrated in MB Sound Integrated in MB Memory: Single 64MB SDRAM DIMM (PC100) (Max 256MB) Hard Disk: 8.3 GB Hard Drive CD Drive: 24-speed vertical CD-ROM drive Interfaces USB 2 x front, 3 x rear VGA 1 x 15-pin D-Sub interface modem 1 x RJ 11 connector LAN 1 x RJ 45 connector Audio Jacks 1 x audio line in, 1 x audio line out 1 x microphone in 1 x headset interface Driver Listings: (Non-Standard ) Windows 98 Top CDROM MITSUMI CD-ROM TX240T !A [Hardware version N/A] [Firmware version H01J] [Provider: Microsoft] [Driver Date: 4-23-1999] Human Interface Device USB Human Interface Device [Provider: Microsoft] [Date: 4-23-1999] Keyboard HID-compliant Keyboard [Provider: Microsoft] [Date: 4-23-1999] Mouse HID-compliant mouse [Provider: Microsoft] [Date: 4-23-1999] Multi-function adapters SiS960 Multifunction device [Manufacturer: SiS] [Hardware Version: 001] [Date: 1-13-2000] Network adapters SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter [Manufacturer: SiS] [Hardware Version: 001] [Provider: SiS] [Date: 12-28-1999] Display Adapters SiS 530 [Manufacturer: SiS] [Hardware Version: 163] [Provider: Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation] [Date: 1997\07\29] Hard disk controller SiS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller [Manufacturer: Silicon Intergrated Systems] [Hardware Version: 208] [Provider: Microsoft] [Driver Date: 4-23-1999] Modem AMR Voice Modem [Provider: Modem Vendor] [Date: 12-11-1999] Sound Video and Game Controllers SiS 7018 PCI Audio WDM driver [Manufacturer: Silicon Integrated System] [Provider: SiS] [Date: 2-29-2000] Universal serial bus controller SiS 7001PCI to USB Open Host Controller [Manufacturer: Silicon Integrated System] [Hardware Version: 007] [Provider: Microsoft] [Date: 4-23-1999] I hope the above info helps. I am trying to get a SuSE 7.3 "virgin" install on my daughter's computer to work with an SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet card. I have searched in the list archive and learned that I need to run the 2.2 kernel, which I have done, but still nothing is working. Our WAN/LAN is setup via a LinkSys router to a 3Com cable modem. DHCP is supposed to be automatically assigned, but I get the following message when saving the card settings in YAST2:
"No IP address was assigned eth0 is not running"
This is only temporary until my SuSE 8.1 arrives, but now is the time to turn my daughter to the "force" as her "dark side" Win 98 SE system just got shot to hell ;-)
If anyone is interested in helping, I can send a file with all the specs on the computer, a Fujitsu-Siemens Celvin EasyPC.
Cheers,
Brian
------------------------- Brian, I believe 7.3 installs the 2.4 kernel and that should be used not the 2.2 kernel. I have the SiS 900 ethernet on my system as well, I believe and 7.3 worked well with it as did 7.2, so I don't think you want to go backwards in the kernel. Now my Lan is built in to the motherboard, but I see you say yours is a card. Have you tried another card?
If it is built-in, then what is the motherboard? The SiS lan is very well supported under SuSE, so it seems odd yours did not activate.
