Hi.
I have SuSE 8.1 installed on my computer. As I have only a 56k modem connection at home, the KDE 3.1 files are much quicker to download at work. SuSE's ftp server location from where the files are dowmloaded is ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.1. There are subdirectories for "base", "applications", etc. Is this the correct location?
Having downloaded the files in these subdirectories, which of these directoies are manadatory updates and which are optional?
Download the lot from your nearest ftp mirror and put them all in one directory. cd into it. Run rpm -Fvh as root, this will update only those rpms that are actually installed. Using -Uvh may involve installing a slew of stuff you don't want. If there are any dependency errors, resolve them and then repeat the exact same operation. Run SuSEconfig, restart kde, you're done.
KDE doesn't have to be uninstalled. In fact I have done all this several times from a Konsole within KDE, this is considered less than perfect but has never given me any trouble. I have yet to be obliged to run with --nodeps, as so far reading and acting on the dependency messages has always led to a resolution. I chose to use --force once, but only after checking that the problem only involved one icon, and was too trivial to worry about.
Keep that directory around - if you discover you want an uninstalled
you can be fairly sure of finding the right version to install here, at least until your next KDE upgrade.
Commandline rpm has served me well - judging by the number of posts from
Fergus,
Thank you for your help. I will try tonight and let you know how I got on.

stuck using other methods, I consider it a bit under-rated. This method works nicely for the patch.rpms in the updates folders of ftp.suse.com, too.

To update KDE, can the downloaded RPM files be installed with Kpackage
or
Yast over the existing packages? Alternatively, does KDE have to removed before applying the upgrade?
Your assistance ot help will be appreciated.
