Printing problem

While printing a job to my USB printer, the printer ran out of paper. I put
paper back in, but the only way I got the printer going again was to reboot
Linux. The printer showed as "Stopped, accepting jobs." If I started it, it
simply went back to stopped status.
There has to be a better way. Can anyone tell me how I should have brought it
back up?
