I've recreated your System Bell issue. SuSE 8.1 Pro, KDE 3.1 from kde.org.
As for the "Play a Sound" issue I get strange results but not exactly like yours. At first I get a list of sounds from /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ to choose from. If I then go to another section such as Sounds & Multimedia/System Bell and then go back to Sounds & Multimedia/System Notifications it defaults to my home directory.
As it does kere (but no list of sounds the first time)
UNLESS I choose the same sound from the /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ directory, Apply it and that absolute directory is still there when I come back from a different section of kcontrol. THEN it will keep the /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ directory as a default for all the KDE System Notifications.
I am always getting a file list but not from the same directory in a consistent manner without manual intervention. Not the behavior I expect in this program. I expect it to know its default directory and keep it except where manually altered per item.
Although I don't get a file list in the first requester, it is in the correct directory (/opt/kde3/share/sounds/) , the second time I open the requester (after moving to a diferent section of kcontrol and then back) it is in my home directory as you described, but now showing files as well as directories.
Not sure whether this is a bug because the kde.org install of 3.1 (on my otherwise up-to-date via YOU system) did NOT go without some manual tweaking of reinstalling all the RPMs in different orders depending on what worked...
-----------snip------------ My upgrade went pretty smoothly, a fairly fresh system, then yast online updates, then a full apt upgrade (minus mozilla, ximian, kernel upgrades and mantel). Followed this with the kde3.1 upgrade following kde.orgs directions. There were 2 or 3 package conflicts that I used the suggested resolutions for. I'm glad you were able to reproduce this, It's really wierd. There seem to be a couple of weak spots in the kcontrolcenter that weren't there before. I probably won't spend alot of time worrying about this one, I really dont use system sounds to much. I was just surprised when I ran across it. Thanks for your detailed reply.
