I was seeing the same behavior on my SuSE 8.0 system with 256MB of RAM. I installed 8.1 over the weekend and the problem has disappeared. If you don't want to go to 8.1, I would investigate loading a newer kernel and see if that solves the problem.
Actually, I do own a copy of SuSE 8.1 PRO which I've installed on my laptop but not yet on my desktop machine. I had plans to upgrade to SuSE 8.1 but just haven't done it yet. My machine has 256 MB of memory and 256 MB of swap. Previous to having this problem, I would seldom swap. Thanks to all who have replied.
