Ok, so ignore that previous e-mail...
I have done lots of rpm installs, updates, removes, etc., so I thought I understood the process. What I didn't understand is that with kernel stuff, the new does not automatically replace the old as the active code. I guess that makes sense, or you could find yourself with a dead system.
So, having installed the newer kernel package, what I should have is a new boot image. What I need to do is to edit grub.conf or lilo.conf to ALSO point to that new image, as one of the bootup choices. Then, if it works, next time I boot, I can further edit to make the new image the default (and leave the old image available for a while.... just.... in.... case...).
Is that correct?
A 'rpm -Uvh whatever.rpm' Should have done all that was necessary to have the updated kernel running the next time you reboot.
What else am I missing?
Your problem in not getting ahold of k_athlon-2.4.19-167 and installing it MAY have been due to your having looked at the wrong directory -- you might have somehow downloaded from the directory containing the ftp version of their DVD (just a guess). You should have gone to: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.1/rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm (or see below if you did go to the right directory.)
Bonus question: k_athlon-2.4.1-66 and k_athlon-2.4.1-167 seem to have the same info summary text. So, is the higher number better? It's from November, but it is still not in the SuSE Online Update selection... does this imply that SuSE thinks it is flawed? Or that SuSE didn't have time to validate it yet? Or that SuSE thinks it doesn't offer sufficient additional benefits for them to bother devoting scarce resources to testing/validating it? Other?
I did a complete mirror of their update directory and this is what I downloaded: markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-updates> find -name 'k_athlon*' -exec ls -l {} ; -rw-r--r-- 1 markgray users 182701 2002-11-26 22:17 ./rpm/src/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.src.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 markgray users 689 2002-12-03 11:26 ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586_en.info -rw-r--r-- 1 markgray users 14139369 2002-12-03 16:25 ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.patch.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 markgray users 720 2002-12-03 11:26 ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586_de.info -rw-r--r-- 1 markgray users 21905112 2002-11-27 03:17 ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-updates> md5sum ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm aed0723745801c681b3afdd974f0b787 ./rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm If the md5sum on the k_athlon-2.4.19-66 you downloaded is the same as the md5sum of k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm here, then I suspect that SuSE may have released the fix without increasing the rpm version number, realized their mistake, withdrew it and put k_athlon-2.4.19-167 in its place, but not before the mirror you went to to get k_athlon-2.4.19-66 had mirrored it. And: markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-updates> cd ../8.1-dvd/suse/ markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-dvd/suse> find -name 'k_athlon*' -exec ls -l {} ; -r--r--r-- 1 root root 21394294 2002-09-13 10:36 ./i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-66.i586.rpm markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-dvd/suse> md5sum ./i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-66.i586.rpm d0de536c8a1674e985a58e5c6db5185b ./i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-66.i586.rpm markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-dvd/suse> ... the version of the athlon kernel on my DVD was k_athlon-2.4.19-66 as you can see, dated September 13, 2002. I hope this clears things up for you -- if the md5sums agree with k_athlon-2.4.19-167 you are probably set (except of course that Yast, YOU and rpm are going to screwed up from now on when it comes time to update the kernel unless you go to the trouble of getting the version right.)
