Has anyone used CheckInstall? While surfing for background information on building RPMs, a project called CheckInstall surfaced. If programs are built from source files, this utility builds an RPM, making installation and removal of binaries easier. In brief, after downloading sources, run the normal ./configure & ./make commands. However, instead of running "make install" execute "checkinstall". An RPM is automatically created. If "make install" is not used but another command (eg. ./recompile), running "checkinstall ./recompile" still works. As an experiment, a small source file was compiled and installed using checkinstall. The only issue was checkinstall aborted, saying "rpmbuild" could not be found. A search on Goolge revealed that all references to "rpmbuild" in the checkinstall script should be changed to "rpm". As an alternative, a symbolic link called "rpmbuild" was created pointing to "rpm". This way the original script does not have to be amended and neither will subsequent updates. The RPM was built successfully. This program enables compiled sources to be stored as RPM. If these binaries have to be re-installed after a system crash, no re-compiling is necessary. One other problem is that if a complied binary has to de-installed, it is difficult to keep track of the files associated with the application. Using the RPM, all files can be deleted. There is an entry for the application and related files in the RPM database. Hope you find this information useful. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
