Well, that's your problem. gtk-config is a relatively simple shell script, the purpose of which is to give programs you compile the locations of your include files and libraries. If you install it from some other source, it will give the wrong locations and the compile will fail. gtk-config is included in the gtk-devel rpm and that's what you should use
