You do not require the telnet server to connect to the sendmail port - simply the telnet client. Putting the telnet server on a system is very insecure. It is possible you have not fully configured sendmail correctly. It is trying to do a lookup during the connection phase and is not allowing "localhost" connections. I would check your log files to look for anything of interest. And for goodness sakes, don't install the telnet server! ciao Kat PS -- you are better off with postfix instead of sendmail anyway -- it is an option during the install. I installed SuSE 8.0 with the sendmail package packed with it. I can telnet only localhost on port 25 but I cannot telnet computername on port 25. What is the problem? Thank you so much for your assistance.
Assuming that you have telnet services enabled in /etc/inetd.conf, you'll also need to install the telnet-server using YaST.
