If SuSE recognized your friends card it should have picked the right driver
for it, considering there's only one driver that comes with X for the Radeon
series cards.

Did you make sure your friend chose the right monitor model for his setup
and that it is using the right refresh rates? Have you considered making up
an X11Config by hand? It'll be a lot easier than compiling X from source.
