Strangely enough, there was only a /usr/X11R6/bin/kde3 symlink pointing at //opt/kde3/bin/startkde ??
I have just installed 8.1 so I hadn't run into the problem yet. I did a ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/kde and got /usr/X11R6/bin/kde -> //opt/kde3//bin/startkde I haven't done much since install so the problem seems to SuSE generated.
