Easy installation should not be a reason to upgrade
Of course.
thought and the latest versions of software are always available from their own websites.
Why do distributions exist? To make it easier on you to get work done with Linux. Now, of course latest versions are available from sites, but if you spend your time compiling shitloads of stuff, there's less time left for the things you really like. I only compile avifile CVS and mplayer (when avifile CVS is broken), used to compile the kernel too, all the rest I use from rpm.
The packages I care for to have the latest version of are LyX and WindowMaker, for the rest I can live with what is already there.
Here you are saying that you don't need the latest, except for LyX and WM, then you don't really need an upgrade. Other people might need more newer stuff. I'm not an old time SuSEr, I converted since 8.0 came up. In every installation I have done, I have chosen Postfix instead of Sendmail and CUPS instead of lprng. Now, with 8.1 there will be less things to worry about. -- Silviu Marin-Caea Systems Engineer Linux/Unix http://www.genesys.ro Phone +40723-267961
