When it starts the message appears "Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it."
Do you use KDE? If so, chances are high that artsd is running. In that case, start realplayer like this: 'artsdsp realplay' That way it will be tricked into not directly trying to open /dev/dsp but instead device artsd provides. This will also allow other ARTS aware programs to play sounds concurrently, so for instance you get audible notifications from KDE while RealPlayer is running.
