Well, after trying adding and removing the fonts several times in different ways (KDE, SuSEconfig, ttmkfdir...) I tried downloading the fonts from corefonts.sourceforge.net - my copies must have been from an old version of Windows, because now it works beautifully. Just copy the TTF files to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype, run SuSEconfig, and restart X11.
