Tried adding to /etc/init.d/boot.local and to /etc/boot.local but that does not work.

Hi Art, Try including 'ieee1394' or whatever it is in the INITRD_MODULES line in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and run mk_initrd (eventually also lilo). This will load the modules already in initial ramdisk.
