Back in the old days, it was possible to view the music file on a CD-ROM. I want to copy a few song files onto the hard drive. I was expecting to be able to brows the CD-ROM with Konqueror and do a drag and drop, or at least do these things from a command prompt. This doesn't seem quite as straight forward as I expected it to be.
I think that is a trick of konkeror it self, music Cds contains no files. sound tracks have to be "ripped".
Another thing I can't figure out is how to play music from the DVD. The DVD is /dev/sr1, whereas the CD-R/W is /dev/sr0.
For sound they are not accessed that way. They do not need to be even mounted. I can play from both the cd or dvd reader, using suse 7.3.
2a What do those stupid little wires you connect between the soundcard and the CD-ROM or DVD actually do?
The music is converted form digital to analog voltages inside the player or reader, which are connected directly to the sound card for output to the speakers. Once the player starts no CPU is needed.
3) Has anybody had a similar problem with a CD-ROM or CD-W/R jumping from one track to another?
Perhaps dust in the head tracking system. You could clean it, but... I'm not sure how, I can't explain. If you do, make sure no oil touches the lenses.
4) Can I play music directly from a harddrive?
Of course: as sound files; usually mp3 files. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
